Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum net worth to become a Pitcairn client?

Pitcairn typically works with individuals and families who have $25 million or more in investable assets. Our clients often have complex wealth structures that may include trusts, operating businesses, concentrated stock positions, real estate holdings, philanthropic entities, or multigenerational family dynamics. Our Shared Single-Family Office® model is designed to help families navigate that complexity with an integrated, long-term approach.

Who is the ideal Pitcairn client?

The ideal Pitcairn client is an ultra-high-net-worth individual or family seeking more than traditional investment management. Many of the families we serve are navigating the complexities that come with significant wealth, including trusts and estates, business ownership, liquidity events, real estate, philanthropy, and preparing future generations for wealth stewardship. They are looking for a trusted advisor who can help coordinate both the financial and human dimensions of wealth, balancing investment strategy, governance, family dynamics, and long-term legacy planning through a highly personal relationship.

What are your fees? How does Pitcairn get compensated?

Pitcairn's fees are based on the scope and complexity of each client relationship and are generally calculated as a percentage of investable assets under management. As a fiduciary, Pitcairn is legally and ethically obligated to act in our clients' best interests. We are not compensated for selling investment products and we do not receive commissions, which allows us to provide objective advice aligned with each family's goals and long-term priorities.

What is your investment philosophy?

At Pitcairn, we believe successful investing is about more than pursuing returns. It is about integrating investment strategy into the broader context of a family's wealth, values, and long-term purpose. Over decades of working with ultra-high-net-worth families, we have found that enduring success comes from disciplined planning, careful risk management, and alignment across all aspects of a family's financial life.

While many firms focus narrowly on asset allocation or investment products, Pitcairn takes a more integrated approach. We build portfolios with careful consideration for taxes, liquidity needs, estate structures, philanthropic goals, governance, and the dynamics of each family. The result is an investment strategy designed not only to grow and preserve wealth but also to support the family behind it for generations to come.

I’m selling (or have recently sold) a business. What can Pitcairn do to prepare me and my family for a successful exit?

A business transition can be one of the most significant financial and personal events in a family's life. Pitcairn helps families prepare not only for the transaction itself but also for what comes afterward. We work closely with clients before, during, and after a liquidity event to help address wealth planning, tax strategy, liquidity management, succession considerations, and leadership transition.

Just as importantly, we help families navigate the emotional and relational aspects of a major transition, including redefining purpose, preparing family members for new responsibilities, and building confidence around long-term wealth stewardship. Our goal is to help families move from a moment of liquidity to a lasting legacy.

My adult children or other family members don't know or understand how much wealth our family has. How can Pitcairn help us?

Preparing the rising generation for wealth ownership is a core part of Pitcairn's Shared Single-Family Office® approach. Many families struggle with how and when to begin conversations about wealth. Pitcairn helps families navigate those discussions with intention through family engagement, education, and coaching designed around each family's values and goals.

We work with family members across all age groups and life stages to build financial literacy, encourage responsible decision-making, and develop the skills and confidence needed for long-term wealth stewardship. Our role is not simply to manage assets but to help families prepare future generations to manage wealth responsibly and meaningfully.

Sustaining Wealth Across Generations

We have helped our client families transition wealth across multiple generations through effective planning, disciplined investing, sound governance, and a commitment to education. Here are some of our clients’ stories.

What Can Be Done When Tangled Trusts Do More Harm Than Good?

Over many years and multiple generations, a family’s trust structure can grow tangled and costly. Sorting and streamlining over 80 trusts helped one family simplify their estate planning, reduce costs, and stave off a potentially significant tax liability.
