Family Office Design

When a business carries a family's name, history, and future, every decision is layered. Pitcairn helps multigenerational owner families build the governance, alignment, and next-generation readiness that keep both the enterprise and the family strong.

The Enterprise Endures When the Family Decides Well

Most family enterprises do not falter because of markets or competitors. They falter at the seams between family and business: unclear authority, meetings that circle without concluding, successors who were never truly prepared, and owners whose goals quietly diverged years ago.

Where We Help

Family and Ownership Governance
Clarity on who decides what, and in which forum. We help families design and run the structures that fit their size and stage, from shareholder agreements and family councils to boards with independent voices, so authority is understood and decisions have a home.
Decision-Making and Communication
Meetings that end in decisions, not repetition. We establish decision frameworks and communication rhythms that give every generation a voice while keeping the enterprise moving.
Succession and Leadership Transition
Confidence about timing, readiness, and fit. We help families plan leadership transitions deliberately, evaluating candidates honestly (family and non-family alike), sequencing the handoff, and supporting both the rising leader and the one letting go.
Owner and Shareholder Alignment
A shared direction among owners with different roles. Active operators, passive shareholders, and trustees often want different things from the same enterprise. We surface those differences early and help the ownership group align on dividends, reinvestment, liquidity options, and long-term direction.
Next-Generation Development
Successors who are prepared, not just appointed. Through structured education, mentoring, and real responsibility, we help rising generations build the competence and commitment that ownership demands, work we pair with Pitcairn's broader family engagement and education programs.
Legacy and Philanthropy Integration
An enterprise strategy that reflects the family's values. We help families connect their giving, their values, and their business decisions so the enterprise stands for something across generations.

Why Families Choose Pitcairn

We are a family that faced these questions ourselves.

Pitcairn began as a single-family office for the founders of an industrial enterprise. We know from our own history what it takes for a family to govern shared assets across generations, because we have done it for more than a century.

Governance connected to everything else.

Enterprise decisions never happen in isolation. As part of Pitcairn’s integrated family office services, our governance work connects directly to your family’s planning, investments, tax strategy, trusts, and education, so the pieces reinforce one another.

A neutral voice in the room.

Family conversations about power, money, and succession are hard to hold from the inside. Pitcairn brings an experienced outside perspective with no stake in the outcome other than your family’s continuity. We are privately held, family-led, and independent, and we sell no products.

Common Questions from Our Families

What is family governance, and when does a family need it?

Family governance is the set of structures and agreements a family uses to make decisions about shared assets, including a family enterprise. It can include shareholder agreements, family councils, boards, family constitutions, and regular family meetings. Families typically need formal governance when ownership spreads beyond the founders, when generations with different roles must decide together, or when informal decision-making starts producing conflict or stalemate.

How do we prepare the next generation to lead or own the business?

Preparation works best when it starts early and involves real responsibility, not just observation. Effective approaches combine education about the business and about ownership itself, mentoring from current leaders and outside advisors, defined roles with genuine accountability, and honest conversations about expectations on both sides. Pitcairn pairs this work with our family engagement and education programs.

What is the difference between a family council and a board of directors?

A board of directors governs the business. It oversees strategy, management, and performance on behalf of all shareholders. A family council governs the family's relationship to the business. It is the forum where the family develops a shared voice on values, employment policies, ownership expectations, and next-generation development, which it then communicates to the board. Larger family enterprises often benefit from both, with clear boundaries between them.

What happens when family owners disagree about the direction of the business?

Disagreement among owners is normal, and it becomes dangerous only when there is no structured way to resolve it. The work usually starts by surfacing each owner's actual goals (income, growth, liquidity, legacy, involvement), which are often less opposed than the conflict suggests. From there, families can design mechanisms such as dividend policies, internal liquidity programs, and defined decision rights that let owners with different goals remain aligned. An experienced outside facilitator helps these conversations stay productive.

Does Pitcairn replace our attorneys and accountants?

No. Your legal and tax advisors remain essential, and we coordinate closely with them. Pitcairn's role is the layer they are not positioned to provide: facilitating the family's alignment, designing the governance framework, preparing the next generation, and connecting enterprise decisions to your family's broader wealth strategy.
